Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio
The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
