Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures First Championship in Over Two Years
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback the Russian player won his first trophy for over two years with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a former world number one, has endured a difficult season, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in specific - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former trainer Gilles Cervara.
Currently collaborating with his coach and his other coach, he has consistently improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a tightly fought three-set victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This marks the player's maiden championship following the Italian tournament and first on a hard court after March of that year.
Victory also signifies the Russian has achieved twenty-one championships at 21 different tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my children together, so to secure a trophy is really nice," stated ranked player Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child my daughter was born was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, featuring in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive strategy and regular outbursts on court had led some to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was over.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and compete assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.
Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult opponent, taking 4 of the final five games to gain the advantage.
The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour championship, took control to force a third set.
Moutet saved 4 early chances in a competitive final set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.
Fittingly, the winner earned victory with a rally at the net, with Moutet failing to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
