World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under a tenth of people who could benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its first advice on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Per forecasts, over two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong treatment," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to widespread access to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, explains the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Despite the current most favorable case, the production of such drugs could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the WHO.

The recommendation calls on nations and manufacturers to expand access, through measures such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Work

GLP-1 drugs mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

People usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research indicates users may see weight return a year later of halting the drug, when their usual hunger resume.

Being overweight or obese raises your likelihood for contracting diseases, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight impacts people in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
